7 Wine journaling apps & more

For the love of Wine, how to keep track of all the fine bottles, grapes, tasting notes, lest alone the places we have visited over the years. Smartphone users who have been searching for Android mobile wine apps, wine searches, food & wine pairing. On a regular base I’ll browse for new versions, check and use apps, recently I found some new ones and revisited former app. The apps are downloaded on my Samsung Note 3 device. Here’s an overview of wine journaling apps & more. Note: The wine apps use different scoring systems, most commonly given out of 100, 20, 10 or 5 points.

7 Wine journaling apps & more

1. Vivino wine scanner         Android frad;ee or paid version €3.99

Vivino Wine Scanner Android apps op Google Play

Vivino

I had used Vivino a few years back and at the time one of the major issues was that the camera had focus problems, rendering the search function in operable. However after hearing and reading positive reviews I have re-installed the app. True enough the image-recognition is working perfectly, with the feedback from users they have made improvements to the app. A new feature I like is the recommendation of ‘Best wines under €15 right now’ as rated by Vivino users in The Netherlands (location based) over the past month. For e.g. it recommends a Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore 2012 Casa Nostra, €12 ranked #10, based on 86 user ratings with a 4.6 score. For wines it uses a 5-point scale for scores, the above mentioned  wine is rated 3 stars. The paid Pro version promises wine cellar management with My Cellar for wine collectors, haven’t heard or read specifically feedback on this function yet.

2. Wine Notes                         Android free or paid version €0.74

Wine Notes Android apps op Google Play

Wine Notes

This app really feels like a wine journaling app, Wine Notes has a clean UI, the background is very dark which might lead to viewing problems if used in darkened surrounding or with mood-lightning settings. The wine journal is more comprehensive and allows you to catalog your personal impression on your favorite wines. I have only started using Wine Notes recently and the camera works but lacks a bar-code scanner. It features a dictionary with 100 key terms and uses the 100-scale system, which is based on the American high-school marking system, so the scale starts at 50 (rather than 0) and popularized by the Wine Spectator magazine. Which means that the same Valpolicella wine used as example above has a 83/100 rating using the 100 score scale.

3. WS Wine Secretary          Android free

WS Wijn en wijnkelder Android apps op Google Play

WS Wine Secretary

The Wine Secretary is an impressive wine journaling and wine search app; with an enormous wine database, wine details, local database of 1000+ wine regions and 70+ varietals, on- and off-line use. On top of all that, adding your own wine notes based on wine style. Like Vivino and Wine fog app following next, the Wine Secretary uses the same 5-point scale for wine scores too. For Dutch readers click for review: Wijn en wijnkelder app Nederlandse beschrijving.

4. Wine fog                                 Android free

Wine Fog Android apps op Google Play

Winefog

The Wine fog app is a new discovery and the first impression just on looks is that it lies in between Vivino and Wine Notes and has the 5-point scale for wine scores as well. Different from the other apps, Wine fog backs up all of your data into the cloud in case you switch phones or use multiple devices and is suitable for tablets.

5. Winesearcher                        Android free

Wine Searcher Android apps op Google Play

Winesearcher

Another impressive app built around Winesearcher price comparison engine, listing almost 7 million bottles from 50,000 merchants around the world. Assisting millions of people locate, price-compare and purchase quality wines, beers and spirits. If you want to find the best vintage or a wine shop nearby, just type in a name or take a snapshot and their label recognition scanner will quickly present you with ‘location based’ recommendations with the best value bottles and answers. They have added a a camera for snapshots still in beta mode, in the settings you can modify your preferences. Next to the where to buy information, is an overview of wine details, wine producer information with even a price history and search rank based on Wine-Searcher popularity of last year. Under the vintages you will find the year with and a 100 score scale rating and if available an average price.

Food and Wine pairing apps

7. Wine find                                  Buy €1.76

Wine Find Android apps op Google Play

Winefind

The beauty of this app it fills in the  gap of wine and food pairing with feathered and furred game dishes, it has a comprehensive section with recommendations. “The app, developed in partnership with Halesown-based Smartphone Media, works as both a training tool for hospitality students, a point of reference for industry professionals and a bank of knowledge for anyone who loves food and wine but isn’t sure how to get the best out of both”. Just Wine

Just Wine Android apps op Google Play

Just Wine

This is a new app which I had downloaded a few months earlier, at first glance you’ll notice immediately the use of rich feature images very appealing visuals. However I was very disappointed with the QR scanner not working and not able to add wine notes, I decided to remove the app for now. Left a review comment on which I received promptly a reply from the developers.

Mobility Quotient 3 december 2014

Thanks for the feedback. The QR scanner works with url supported codes, unfortunately not every wine producer uses these. You can add your own wine notes from the main menu. Please check back soon, we’re adding tens of thousands of new wine records to search!

It is a promising app worth to mention and hopefully the feedback will speed up the next version with improvements.

Which of the above wine apps are you using already, share your findings and experience or your favorite by sending a comment on this post.

Train travel in China tips & information

Last year after Spring Festival in March we were travelling around Guangdong and Zhejiang Province in China. The masses of travellers and passengers which are transported on a daily basis is incredible. Here in The Netherlands we often grumble and complain about NS, the Dutch railway company, about train delays often signalling problems or other service disruptions.

Train travel in China tips & information

As a passenger, you don’t want to be stranded anywhere (Train and Rail Travel info in The Netherlands). However, it is just a drop in an ocean if you see the number of people travelling in China using public transport as buses, MTR’s, train stations, domestic and International airports “humongous”.

With 10.276 million riders every day (Daily Record) and transporting 3.029 billion people travelling Beijing Subway last year 2013!

Today China boasts both the world’s longest and second longest metro systems. Out of the top 10 busiest metro systems in the world 4 of them are in China. The first subway in China was built in Beijing in 1969. The Tianjin Metro followed in 1984. Since 2000, the growth of rapid transit systems in Chinese cities has accelerated. The Shanghai Metro despite being the world’s longest only started operating in 1993. From 2009 to 2015, China plans to build 87 mass transit rail lines, totaling 2,495 km, in 25 cities. Source: Wikipedia Urban rail transit China.

As another netizen pointed out, it’s good to have another transportation available for speed besides aeroplanes, which is the CRH the high-speed train or a.k.a bullet train. Analyst says that Beijing-Shanghai railway is not in competition with Airlines.

Unfortunately, China has had a major train disaster on July 23, 2011, a high-speed train collision in the suburbs of Wenzhou. Read full articles Wenzhou crash report and Wenzhou train collision clicks on the highlighted links.

Rail, which is the primary mode of transport, has doubled in length since the mid-twentieth century, and an extensive network provides service to the entire nation. The larger cities have metro systems in operation, under construction, or in the planning stage. The highway and road system also has gone through rapid expansion, resulting in a rapid increase of motor vehicle use throughout China. Although China’s transport system comprises a vast network of transport nodes across its huge territory, the nodes tend to concentrate in the more economically developed coastal areas and inland cities along major rivers.

China Railway High-speed (CRH) is the high-speed rail service operated by China Railways. Hexie Hao (simplified Chinese: 和谐号; traditional Chinese: 和諧號; pinyin: Héxié Hào; literally: “Harmony”) is the designation for rolling stock operated for this service. Transport in China has experienced major growth and expansion in recent years. Airports, roads, and railway construction will provide a massive employment boost in China over the next decade. Source: Wikepedia.

Train travel bullet trains

Ordering or buying train tickets can be a cumbersome and frustrating process, at the bottom you will find how-to links and information to make reservations and order online in advance.

Thirty-two new bullet train routes will start operation next month, linking Shanghai to Guangzhou, Nanning in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Huaihua in Hunan Province and Nanchang of Jiangxi Province.

All the new bullet trains will depart from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station. The new bullet train will allow passengers to reach Guangzhou in 6 hours and 51 minutes — nine hours less than the previous 16-hour ride by slow train.

Meanwhile, fast trains to cities like Harbin, Shenzhen and Lhasa will be upgraded to direct trains starting from December 10.
via New bullet train routes | Shanghai Daily.

To travel we need transportation and we travel in huge numbers, hence the need for fast mass-transportation. Passengers already travel faster than a horse, car, bullet or standard train or by plane.

Typical consumers argument “faster and cheaper” its never enough. Because for as many supporters there are as many opposers fighting for environmental preservation, loss of habitats etc.

In all honesty and fairness if we didn’t have our modern means of transportation. We would not be able to travel the world as often and conveniently as we are used to in the last quarter of twentieth into the twentieth-first century.

The ShangHai – Beijing bullet train has broken a world speed record, hitting a top speed of 486.1 kilometres per hour in a test run by CNN Travel.

A recently updated article written after the train collision event titled; “Decision to slow trains with mixed responses” on ChinaDaily.com.cn. With another editorial appearing in the Beijing News stated,

“Developing high-speed railways is in keeping with current trends and the aspirations of the people, but what people need are safe trains, affordable fares and quality service.”

Professor Sun Zhang from the Railway and Urban Mass Transit Research Institute of Tongji University said; “We should take time to test the high-speed rail system and gain more experience because that will provide an important reference for the future operation of these trains at high speeds,”

Travelling in China

CRH tickets are compared to Dutch and European high-speed railway very cheap, but in China relatively expensive. Travelling around China on the CRH is very modern, fast, clean and excellent service on board.

We travelled from Hangzhou to Wenzhou in 4 hrs, the standard travel time would be 8 hrs according to the train schedule. More than 25 years ago I travelled the same distance and it took us around one and a half day by ferry boat disembarking on the wharf.

From there we had rented in advance a car to bring us to our hotel and that’s a whole other story by itself. Taxis were old Japanese Toyota’s and sparse least alone hiring little buses named “mianbao che” (they resembled small bread loaves). Compared to those days this is

Compared to those days this is a science-fiction reality, as for the present progress it has its ups and downs. Travelling speed and comfort are here, choices are offered how you want to spend your money and time on the road.

If you have plans visiting more places and provinces in China, travelling on high-speed train or bullet trains is a comfortable and very convenient option to be transported to the heart of coastal city centres.

The train coaches, seats and aisle are in comparison to domestic or continental aeroplanes more spacious. When booking hotels check on free airport pick-up service.

Be prepared that the masses you are travelling with are going through the same exit. The stations are huge, so it was not a surprise we had to walk a fair distance to arrive at the taxi stand to join the long waiting line. Easily adding an hour for taxi service so plan this ahead in your itinerary.

Travelling on the bullet train is very convenient, fast, affordable and for long distance service on board is great. In comparison with aviation service, I might incline towards travelling on the bullet train based on the pleasant travel experience we had.

Honoring the Chinese Railroad Workers; U.S. Labor Hall of Honor

This post features Chinese history of immigrants and their impact on America becoming their home. The first article is the blog post publication of United States Department of Labor blog by Secretary Tom Perez. The Second is a related article with additional information containing a photo and video content authored by John from 8Asians, a blog about Asian American issues.

They Helped Build a Railroad − and a Nation: Honoring the Chinese Railroad Workers

One hundred forty-five years ago tomorrow, May 10, the word “DONE” was telegraphed to Washington D.C., sending word that the final spike had been driven in to complete the First Transcontinental Railroad. It was one of the most remarkable engineering feats of the 19thcentury, connecting the country from coast-to-coast, facilitating commerce and opening the door for massive economic expansion. Before its completion, cross-country travel took six months. The railroad reduced it to a single week.

Chinese Railroad workersBut too often lost in discussions of this awe-inspiring achievement is the contribution of the approximately 12,000 Chinese laborers who took on the grueling task of completing the western section of the track.

It was backbreaking, dangerous work. Many of these workers died from the harsh winters and brutal conditions. They laid tracks on terrain that rose 7,000 feet in less than 100 miles, chipped away at the granite and planted explosives that were used to blast tunnels through the treacherous Sierra Nevada Mountains. Chinese Railroad Workers Inducted into the U.S. Labor Hall of Honor & Reclaiming Promontory Point

Related to the Honoring of the Department of Labor’s Hall of Honor honor for the Chinese railroad workers, the most famous photo related to the completion of the transcontinental railroad was taken with both the Eastern and Western section of the rail track were joined, at what is now known as Promontory Point, in Promontory Summit, Utah. However, no Chinese laborers were included in that famous photo:

“Over the years, one photograph in particular from May 10, 1869, has taken root in U.S. history. “It’s a black-and-white, very historic-looking photo,” says Connie Young Yu, the great-granddaughter of a Chinese laborer on the railroad. The iconic image shows a crowd of men swarmed around two locomotives “In the middle are the two engineers shaking hands,” Yu says. “And above them are workers hoisting champagne bottles.” … But the portrait wasn’t perfect. “History — at least photographically — says that the Chinese were not present,” says photographer Corky Lee. As a junior high school student, he pored over the photo with a magnifying glass. But he couldn’t spot a single Chinese laborer in the picture, even though more than 12,000 workers from southern China were hired by the Central Pacific Railroad. They made up the overwhelming majority of its workforce.”

WSET wine course in Leiden

After years of enjoying many and more glasses of wines and spirits I decided to sign up for the International Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET), qualification Level 2 and 3. The WSET wine course is the largest wine educator in the world with 56,000 students per year in 62 countries. The institution has become the international standard for sommeliers, importers, retailers and hospitality. This action does not come as a surprise for my inner circle, who are familiar with my entrepreneurial history in the restaurant business. The enrollment was just a delay due to travel and living abroad. What’s not to like in another discovery trail and acquiring a certificate for wine appreciation it is hitting two birds with one stone.

WSET wine course in Leiden

The above mentioned WSET wine course has approved program providers in The Netherlands ensuring the high standards of teaching. From the listed companies on the WSET wine course page in Dutch I have chosen the Dutch educational company “Wijnstudio”. The Wine Studio claims since 2005 the highest exam results for the International Wine Certificate with 99 graduates in one take and 71 graduates  for Wine Professional (Source: wsetglobal.com).

The Winestudio is an independent company, who does not sell wines nor being tied to an importer. The company also focuses in addition to the educational courses on gastronomy, the pairing of wine and food taste in flavor and aroma. For those who aspire a professional career and wonder what the education differences entails here are two summarized articles to consider on wine courses; comparison of wine certificationsGuide to Wine education courses. More information in the Wine education widget as listed on our Asianfoodtrail ZEEF page.

Having viewed Dutch wine educational websites information and comparing course fees, it was enlightening to notice their graduates success rate. While this is encouraging information, the decision maker however was distance for preferred location. The WSET wine course program is being held in my present hometown Leiden at a new course location this year. Instead of a bored meeting room it is being hosted now at the wine shop La Bordelaise which lies conveniently in the heart of the city.

Last night entering the class room, all students received the course material and the box with tasting glasses. The Level 2 Award course began with our teacher opening the first bottle of the evening, a Royer Brut Champagne, France. Although we received a wine tasting list overview, I wished I had remembered to take a snapshot of the wine labels. Besides illustration purpose I wanted to test a new mobile wine app, coming up in a next post.

Kitchenaid 5 Quart Plus Series Bowl-lift Stand Mixer

Becoming or being a gadget fan starts with having a hobby or a passion for finding better ways to prepare or achieve a better result. Where else than the kitchen to start with, my family knows I just can not pass a kitchen store, shop or department without browsing around. Same counts for a bookstore, digital electronics and mobile apps. The tools prerequisites; -functional; -practical; -affordable (not always attainable). Handy is The magic word.

I am not sure where the line draws or fades between household appliances and professional equipment. Or what defines an amateur from a professional, while both being passionate in what they design, prepare for the desired outcome. A great dish starts with fine ingredients, a good recipe with the right proportions and the cook bringing it all together.

Does equipment, having the right tools make a difference? Is it about the end result creating divine taste and presentation? The responses to these questions will evoke more than a straightforward answer. The one thing I know is that the tools of the trade and gadgets really can lighten up my day.

Kitchenaid 5 Quart Plus Series

As a teenager I started whipping cream and cakes by hand with an egg beater, slowly advancing to use electrical tools for speed and better results. One thing leads to another by searching for better vessels, improving technique, handy or specific gadgets followed by investing in equipment.

I purchased a KitchenAid Professional 5 Plus Series 5 Quart Bowl-Lift Stand Mixer more than a decade ago. I fell for the patented PowerKnead Spiral Dough Hook and quantity (size), making batter and bread for a large family with guests.

As a bonus, the promotion at the time included extras;  a second stainless steel bowl; 2 plastic bowl covers. The pouring shield with wide chute was bought separately, even still the bonus was a real bargain. If you have to buy these items separately now the total sum now will be around $70-$80 (click on the bowl link for the frequently bought together overview at the bottom).

If you have to buy these items separately it easily adds up $70-$80 (click on the bowl link for the frequently bought together overview at the bottom). KitchenAid discontinued the 5 Plus Series model and launched a whole new Artisan and Professional range.

My 5-quart stand mixer model still works without fail together with the stainless wire whip, the hook and paddle as standard attachments. The only con would be when using the flat beater you still had to scrape the sides as with other likewise counter top machines.

Four years ago I stumbled upon two fantastic gadgets for the Kitchenaid which I ordered online since the products were not available in The Netherlands at that time. I use these attachments constantly and can absolutely recommend these two favourite items;

    BeaterBlade

Whisk-A-Bowl

Beater Blade with a patented silicon wing for KitchenAid which beats, scrapes and folds ingredients beautifully from the sides cleanly no separate scraping needed, the New Metro design Beater Blade an accessory I use as a standard for mixing batters.

Whisk-A-Bowl by Pourfect, a KitchenAid exclusive tool. This attachment outperforms the standard large balloon whisk in beating egg whites, it cuts down on time and improves the volume of beating egg whites.

I also came across the Pourfect Mixing Bowls and Measuring Spoons sets. The measured mixing bowls are easy for prepping ingredients with a little lip at the pout making it easier and sturdier while pouring.

KitchenAid Sideswipe blade is its own improved design as an extra attachment which has soft swipe fins with gaps for better mixing with nuts without crushing them, according to America’s Test Kitchen it outperforms the Beaterblade in better results.

Another tool is the use of silicon mats, they come in various sizes but a silicon pastry mat with measures makes it easier while rolling the dough. The one displayed in the carousel is a Norpro product, by luck in our neighbourhood the local Lidl supermarket store than had an offer just as good and almost in the same price range.

Tip: 02/10/2014 On Amazon.com website I just found out that they sell The KitchenAid 5 Plus Serie KV25GOXER, the same model I own and based this post on. The original list price was $419,00 and now on sale for $287,00 FREE shipping. It was the smallest professional model now being discontinued, but the accessories are still available on the market.

China new economy innovation course

Sharing of news alerts and stories:

In laboratories and startups across China, tinkerers with big dreams are pushing what many in the industry see as a potential new wave of Chinese innovation. They see smart gadgets—wearables and other devices that connect to the Internet or interact with users—as an opportunity to create a Chinese-designed product for a global audience. China is betting heavily on innovation as a way to help its economy develop beyond its traditional reliance on factories, exports and government spending. At a meeting of lawmakers in March, top Chinese economic planning officials called for development of a new generation of smart gadgets as part of a broader effort to emphasize cutting-edge technology. China has invested in areas to help that process, such as a pledge this year to spend 120 billion yuan (nearly $20 billion) over an unspecified period to build its nascent semiconductor industry. New photo video app

Update adding Flipagram on earlier published post 13th September 2014 changed title – Everlapse photo & video app

Added new app Flipagram, please scroll down to for more information and download links.

Always on the look out for digital applications to create great visual content. I just stumbled upon this Instagram application to engage followers and viewers and share on other social platforms as well. Everlapse a new visual sharing tool with a community released last summer July 2013, the app creates photo collections called clips in a repeating slideshow of 20 images. An iOs app is free downloadable on Itunes App Store.

Android users can only create an Instagram Highlights reel using Everlapse website connecting with your Instagram account. Although its fun to see the result and sharing it on Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr, without the release of an Android app its hard to make other flipbooks or photo albums. This is Asianfoodtrail Everlapse Instagram Highlights reel demo for now, would love to try the other options untill an Android version is released soon.

New Photo Video app

It’s here, Flipagram and available for Android, Appstore and Windows phones! What is Flipagram?

Flipagram (http://flipagram.com) lets you turn the pictures on your phone into short photo-video stories, set to music you love. Flipagrams are fun to make, easy to share and have as many uses as there are stories to tell. Source: Crunchbase

“These days, you have to strike while the app is hot.” This is the opening sentence in article on the Startup behind Flipagram, which appeared in the WSJ (click link for full review), which is seeking to raise an investment in the tens of millions that could value the Startup as high as roughly $300 million at the beginning early January this year.

I have downloaded the free Anroid version on my Samsung Note 3, with Flipagram I can use my mobile snapshots or even from other services into animated slideshows. You can add music, some less than 30 seconds are free or pay for premium features to download your favorite music or a personalized watermark. While Flipagram is not even a year old, it is a great example how fast mobile apps can amass significant followings.

Here is my photo video highlights of several dishes for #dinnertonight published on 29 September 2014,  Asianfoodtrail_com Instagram account  or another Instagram viewer Enjoygram. These two applications are for webview of Instagram photos taken with your smartphone.

MH17 tragedy how did we get here?

A bizarre week with high rising temperatures, a short heatwave colliding with temperaments and horrific event of plane crash MH17.

Nightmarish headlines;Remains of the bodies, crashed parts of the plane, still burning engines – that was the dramatic and gruesome picture that local residents saw when the Malaysian plane crashed in the sky over Donetsk Region in eastern Ukraine.” Source: RT.Com News

After visiting our elderly ailing mother who’s health has rapidly declined after suffering severe brain stroke and tia’s (transient ischemic attack a.k.a. mini-stroke). She has a hard time accepting her disabilities which add to a depression of being confined in her own mind and body.

Leaving her nursing/convalescent home I find myself in an odd place of juxtaposition, writing two cards with wishes, one celebrating the birth of a newborn and one for condolences were words just fall short to express my feelings. Sadness for the survivors and pain for the loss of loved ones.

Life, love, alive in stark contrasts, in the background live salsa music while I am crying on the inside for lost dreams and stilted conversations. Colleagues, friends and strangers were literally blown out of the sky while flying high above Ukrainian airspace. People beneath suffering there own domestic fights, but that one action had a global impact forever changing lives of more communities than theirs alone.

Tearing up international relations, communications, organisations and families. Words just fall short to phantom a moment, fleeting time and broken relationships unable to connect or to meet again. Futures altered due to an event far away or close to home, memories is all that’s left, casting a shadow of what could have been. Frustration is mounting, a diplomatic disaster is imminent.

The Crimean crisis is no longer a civil dispute nor just a conspiracy theory, facts and evidence clearly incriminate Ukrainian, Russian and separatist rebels for international ramifications but where does that leave the victims of flight MH17 and their mourning families in this senseless tragedy.

MH17 tragedy how did we get here? The worst part is that I just can not shake the gruesome thought enforced after reading this headline; “MH17: For Bankers, Every Crisis and Tragedy is an Opportunity to Manufacture Profits” (source: www.zerohedge.com http://bit.ly/1rsGavi) leaving a creeping feeling along the spine.

For the love of life, is this it what it has come to, the price of a human life or the benefits of a civil war?! My bile is just creeping up at the back of my throat to lash out for justice to these pawns in the dark, but sanctions will hurt populations first not the antagonists.

Let’s hope that an investigation will indeed probe further to bring truth from this hell of lawlessness actions.
